Sea Creature

I was strolling on the narrow streets of a beach village by the Pacific Coast, gazing at cute gardens and window displays of various boutiques. Turning on a back alley, I discovered  a small shop, specialized mainly in antiques/collectibles/second-hand items. It was closed in that day, so I peeped through some odd shaped windows and noticed an object that captured my interest: a sort of ceramic figurine. I left the beach village, but I kept thinking at the small object.

A year later, I found myself again in that place, and I knew that I had to check on that little shop. It was closed again, and I could not see the object through the window. After some waiting, somebody finally opened the store. I went straight to the back shelf where the figurine used to be. I scrutinized the array of old trinkets and through my joy  I recognized the object that caught my attention at first. It was actually a ceramic soap dish in the form of a whimsical sea creature, maybe a seal; once in a while you can spot a lonely seal in those parts of the coast line. I purchased it right away and told the shop lady about my attraction for the small item when I first saw it a year ago. "It was meant to be," she said.

I have mixed feelings about antiques shops, or basically shops where they sell things that went from owner to owner along the years. Sometimes I am in the mood to rummage through such objects because they carry warm stories, maybe an old love, or journey, or sacrifice. Other times, I feel trapped in a time capsule and don't know how to find my way out-- need to live in the now. But there is indeed a general fascination with antiques. Sometimes, in the middle of nowhere, you only see a gas station and an antique shop. Which is eery, almost like a cemetery, a collection of objects of those that once were. I may be happy for a nice find, but I may want to forget that one day my dear things will return to the antique shops, starting a new cycle of ownership...

Anyway,  I love my sea creature soap dish.  It brings to me the magic of the sea. And I dream sometimes to dive in a shallow reef and dwell there for a while...Even from things like reality, you need to take a break from time to time...

  1. Interesant cu cata rabdare iti construiesti povestea. Eu as fi scris ceva de genu "It was meant to be," si "posteaza". E treaba complicata sa stii sa alegi un obiect purtat. Ca poate veni si cu energie negativa.
